Durgabai Deshmukh
General Hospital and Research Centre of Andhra Mahila Sabha was
established in the year 1950. The institution, which was started by
Dr Durgabai Deshmukh as milk distribution centre, has grown in to a
modern Multi-Specialty hospital, with facilities from Gynaecology to
Geriatrics over last 53 years. The hospital is situated in a very
strategic location near Thiru-vi-Ka bridge at Adyar and the road
itself is named after the illustrious founder Dr Durgabai Deshmukh.
The hospital is known for its facilities in General Medicine,
General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Pediatrics, Neonatology
and Geriatrics. Specialists
consultants from the following specialties like Dentistry, ENT,
Cardiology, Diabetology, Endocrinology, Uology, Psychiatry,
Pulmonology, Pediatric Surgery, Gastro-entrology are also available
in the polyclinic attached to the hospital.
The
hospital has a 24 hours lab attached with in its premises with
facilities for routine Clinical Pathology, Biochemistry,
Histopathology, in addition to ECG and X-ray. Biochemistry tests are
conducted with aid of Semi Auto Analyser & Hormone Tests & HIV test
are done using ELISA Counter. Efforts are also on to provide a CT
Scanner and a Dialysis unit. Yet another unique feature of the lab
at AMS is the QUALITY ASSURANCE tie up with CMC, Vellore.
Periodically the test samples are sent to CMC, Vellore and quality
of tests are ensured. Colour Doppler and Ultra Sonogram are also
available. Further we have a Blood Storage Centre.
The specialty of
DDGH & RC is the geriatric ward a step well ahead of its time and is
one of its kind in the city of Chennai. The Multi Specialty hospital
offers Master Health Check at a very competitive rate of Rs 500/-.
There are two ambulance vans available for use by general public.
Fitting very well with the scheme of Multi-Specialty Hospital and a
Research Centre the hospital runs a Nursing School, Laboratory
Technician's Course - both recognized by Government of Tamilnadu in
addition to a physiotherapy training unit.

vans go out daily to slums and outskirts to give free treatment
and medicines at the doorstep of senior citizens and needy poor
- The eye
department conducts free camp twice a month on Sundays and offers
consultation and free surgery to deserving patients
- Vaccines for
expectant mothers, essential vaccines for children are given free
or at subsidized rates with the help of donations
- Deserving
patients are also provided with free in-patient treatment
- A family welfare
unit with Government Grant is run by the hospital at Santhome.

- A month long
Free Medical Camp for Senior Citizens above 55 years of age was
conducted in July 2006 in memory of the Founder President Dr
Durgabai Deshmukh Birthday. Nearly 1000 Senior Citizens attended
the camp. Lab tests like Blood Sugar, Urine Routine test,
Haemoglobin and ECG were done free of cost. 82 cataract surgeries
were also done free of cost to the poor patients. Special clinics
like Dementia, Assessment of Healthy Arteries were also conducted.
Camp on prostrate gland and Skin diseases were also held
- A week long
Pediatric Camp with the help of Inner Wheel Club of Ashok Nagar
was conducted in November 2006. Consultation for all ailments,
assessment of hearing and eye test were done free of cost and
medicines were given free of cost. Around 500 children were
benefited. Fancy dress Competitions was held as part of the
Valedictory function and participants were given prizes.
- Pediatric
Cardiology Camp was held on 7th January 2007. Around 50 children
below 12 years of age were screened by the Cardiologist from
Apollo Hospital. Dr I Sathyamurthy, Director, Department of
Cardiology and Dr Nelvill Soloman, Cardio Thoracic Surgeon, Apollo
Hospital and their team of doctors examined the children for
detection of Cardiac abnormalities. Echo was done free. About 30
patients were identified for surgical procedures which will be
done free of cost at the Apollo Hospital under their project
SAVE A CHILD HEART
